KUALA LUMPUR: National football coach B. Satianathan will get a chance to see how English Premier League champions Manchester United train and prepare for matches when he goes on a two-week attachment with the club in March.

The FA of Malaysia (FAM) had sought the stint with United as part of their plans to improve the quality of their coaching staff and also update them on new coaching methods.

The FAM deputy president, Khairy Jamaluddin, said after the executive committee meeting yesterday that Satianathan would come under the direct charge of United’s assistant coach Carlos Quierez.

“This is a great opportunity for the coach to gain some valuable insight into the coaching method of a top club.

“We are also looking at our players going on attachments with top clubs,” he said.

Khairy added that they had also asked former Liverpool and Welsh international Ian Rush to hold special clinics for the national forwards and those from the state teams.

“From the report on the team's performance in the Korat SEA Games, it was found that finishing was a major problem of our forwards (Malaysia failed to qualify for the semi-finals),” he said.

“The clinic by Rush is the start of many more such clinics aimed at specific areas in the training programme.

“All the forwards in the national training squad will attend the clinics and we will allow the state teams to send at least one forwards for the stints. We will confirm the dates soon.”
